All of the magic and primal forces in the world of Suikoden are reviving again with reworked modern graphics, audio, gameplay, and higher resolutions. Konami, Suikoden’s original publisher, decided to remaster the first and second games in the series under the title Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. The HD remasters, and a spiritual successor to the series named Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes are set to release sometime in 2024.

Background of Suikoden Game Series

Suikoden has been a fan-favourite ever since the series took off in 1995. Fans began to love this role-playing video game’s rich elements including different battle modes, a vast pool of characters, a team party of up to 6 members at once, and its intriguing storyline.

Timeline of Suikoden Series

The first Suikoden game in the series was released by Konami in 1995 in Japan and was written, directed, and created by Yoshitaka Murayama. In the following years, Suikoden II was released in 1998, rejoicing fans all across Japan. So far there have been 5 Suikoden games in the main series along with 6 spin-offs and 1 compilation.

A peace agreement was recently signed which both parties were happy of. But underneath the peace, a new war is brewing.

The Development Team Behind Suikoden Series

Yoshitaka Murayama was responsible for creating, writing, producing, and supervising the Suikoden series. However, he left Konami towards the end of Suikoden III’s development.

Following his departure, Noritada Matsukawa took over as Senior Director of Suikoden III. Matsukawa also directed Suikoden IV, but the game was produced by Junko Kawano, who was the chief designer in Suikoden I. Suikoden V was directed by Takahiro Sakiyama, a newcomer to RPGs.

The Main Characters of the Suikoden Series

Apart from the characters encountered across the game, there are a total of 108 protagonists that are unlockable as the game progresses. Though it is not mandatory to collect all the characters to complete the game, unlocking all 108 protagonists reveals “The True Ending”.

In terms of the main characters, many diverse and talented individuals make up the game. Here are some of the notable ones in the Suikoden world:

  • Tir McDohl – Tir McDohl is the main protagonist and Tenkai Star (Chief Star of Heaven) of Suikoden. He is the son of Teo McDohl and the leader of the Liberation Army, following the –spoiler- of the original leader, Odessa Silverberg.
  • Pesmerga – He is a mysterious Black Knight and Teni Star (Star of Majesty) in Suikoden I & II. He uses a Crimson Sword, which is a sword that is imbued with runic power.
  • Jeane – Jeane is a mysterious runemistress who has appeared in each of the five main games of the Suikoden series as the Chiketsu Star (Star of Nobel Wisdom).
  • Luc – Luc is the Tenkan Star (Star of Idleness) in Suikoden, Suikoden II, and Suikoden III. He is also the main antagonist in Suikoden III.
  • Viki – Viki is the Chitatsu Star (The Quick Star) and one of the few characters to appear in every major Suikoden game.
  • Riou – is the hero in Suikoden II, and is the silent protagonist and Tenkai Star (Chief Star of Heaven) of that game.
  • Georg Prime – Georg Prime is the Teni Star (Strange Star) in Suikoden II and Suikoden V. He is a renowned swordsman throughout the Suikoden World; commonly referred to as “Deathblow Georg”.
  • Razro – He is widely known by fans as Lazlo and is the protagonist and Tenkai Star (Chief Star of Heavens) in Suikoden IV.
  • Ted – Ted is a recurring character and Tenkan Star (Star of Idleness) in the Suikoden series. He initially appeared in the original Suikoden game and later in Suikoden IV as a playable character.
  • Freyjadour Falenas – Freyjadour Falenas is the Tenkai Star (Chief Star of Heavens) and silent protagonist in Suikoden V.
  • Lorelai – Lorelai is the Chikatsu Star (The Eminent Star) in Suikoden, Suikoden II, and Suikoden V. She hunts for the secrets of the Sindar race, and claims to be one.

What’s New in Suikoden Original vs Remaster?

Konami unveiled an announcement trailer on Sep 16, 2022, showcasing key improvements coming in the famous JPRG remaster; Suikoden. As part of the Tokyo Game Show 2022, the video gave a glimpse into significantly improved graphics, reworked environments, and artwork.

Latest Features Coming to Suikoden HD Remaster

In addition to improved graphics, Suikoden I & II HD Remaster will feature improved environmental sound effects which were not present in the previous games.

Additionally, some parts were reworked for the remaster such as the environment, foliage, trees, waterfalls, characters, attack animations, magic particles and artworks. Furthermore, Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster skips the old, dark vibes and introduces an adventurous world with modern graphics.

Suikoden Remaster Release Date and Where to Buy It

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars were initially announced at the Tokyo Game Show 2022, stating a release date sometime in 2023. However, in a surprising turn of events, Konami released a statement pushing the game’s launch back to an unknown date.

Konami stated, “Regarding the planned release of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, we have reached the conclusion that despite the very best efforts of our dedicated development staff to release the Remasters in 2023, additional time is needed to ensure the quality performance and gameplay experience our users deserve.”
